Reading Comprehension

Speech therapy is often part of an IEP, or Individualized Education Plan, for children who struggle with reading comprehension. Speech pathologists are trained to use different approaches to help facilitate the development of skills that are crucial to reading comprehension, including:

  • Attention Skills
  • Memory Skills
  • Language Processing Skills
  • Writing Ability

Written Expression

Writing is one of the most important skills to develop in order to succeed in school. Students who struggle with written expression may have difficulty organizing their thoughts, writing sentences, and completing assignments. They may also struggle with grammar, spelling, and punctuation. There are many different ways to use speech and language therapy in this area, including:

  • Working on phonological awareness
  • Improving vocabulary and grammar skills
  • Exploring how ideas are connected in written text
  • Helping students understand how they can organize their thoughts into paragraphs
  • Helping students learn how to use punctuation effectively

Homework and Organization Skills

In the classroom, students can benefit from speech and language therapy skills training in a number of ways. For example, students may struggle with organization, staying on task with their schoolwork, or following instructions from their teacher. These are all common problems that are associated with speech and language disorders. Therapists work with children of all ages to improve their ability to communicate effectively. This can mean that your child will be able to make requests, tell stories, or ask questions more easily. It also means that they'll be able to understand what others are saying to them, which makes it easier for them to participate in classroom activities, follow detailed directions, complete homework assignments, and organize materials needed for school projects.
